Chapter 1 Price of touch

Chapter 1

The price of touch

When Charlotte Scott woke up, her entire body ached with a dull, throbbing pain. She lay on the cold, hard floor, her eyes fixed on the high ceiling above. Her mind was flooded with images of Brown-his face, his presence, everything about him. Last night, in her father's now-empty office, they had crossed a line they never should have. For three years, he had kept his distance, never touching her. But now, after all this time, he had. And she knew it wasn't about love. It was about revenge. Brown's adoptive father hated the Chloe family, and so did he. The thought made her head pound.

She pushed herself up from the floor, leaning heavily against the wall. Her eyes fell on the bloodstains smeared across the ground and the disheveled clothes scattered nearby. A wave of shame washed over her, so intense it made her tremble. She felt exposed, violated, as if the room itself was judging her.

Just then, the sound of light, hurried footsteps echoed in the distance. Panicked, Charlotte Scott crouched down, trying to make herself small. The footsteps grew closer, and she looked up to see a middle-aged woman in a maid's uniform approaching. The woman carried a box of pills and a bottle of water, which she handed to Charlotte Scott without a word.

"Chloe, these are your medications," the maid said, her tone polite but detached. "Mr. Chris instructed that you take them as soon as you woke up."

Charlotte Scott nodded shakily, taking the bag from the woman's hands. She opened it and saw the pills inside-contraceptives. Without hesitation, she swallowed them, though they stuck in her throat. She gulped down several mouthfuls of water to force them down.

"Chloe," the maid continued, her voice calm but firm, "Mr. Chris has also arranged for you to be taken back to the villa. It's getting late."

"The villa?" Charlotte Scott's eyes widened in alarm. She shook her head frantically. "No, I can't go there. My brother is sick-I need to take care of him. I can't leave him."

The maid's expression didn't change. "Chloe, Mr. Chris mentioned that he wishes to see you again. He also said that he's willing to cover the medical expenses for your younger brother. There will be more costs in the future, and Mr. Chris is prepared to handle them."

Charlotte Scott's heart sank. She knew what this meant. It wasn't an offer-it was a demand. And she had no choice but to comply.

"..." Charlotte Scott looked up, her eyes filled with helplessness as she gazed at the middle-aged maid.

"Chloe, let's not waste any more time. The car is waiting outside," the maid said, extending her hand towards Charlotte Scott.

Realizing there was no escape, Charlotte Scott instinctively grasped the maid's hand. With a slight tug, the maid effortlessly pulled her to her feet.

Three hours later, she was escorted by the maid and the driver to Brown's villa.

The villa was immaculate, spotless to the eye, yet to Charlotte Scott, it felt disturbingly tainted.

Clang!

The bedroom door upstairs swung open, and Brown emerged, impeccably dressed, holding several contracts in his hand.

He descended the stairs with brisk efficiency and tossed the documents onto the coffee table in front of Charlotte Scott.

"These are some contracts regarding the Chloe Group. Once you sign them, everything about the Chloe Group will no longer concern you-neither the debts nor the Chloe Group building."

"What do you mean?"

"You can't fill these massive holes. Of course, it's up to you whether to sign or not. If you don't, you'll have to deal with these debts yourself. But this isn't about fifty or five hundred dollars. I've found an easier path for you. It's your choice to take it or not."

Losing patience, Brown set down the documents and turned to leave.

Seeing his retreating figure, Charlotte Scott rushed forward and blocked his path. "Brown, don't go."

"If you've changed your mind, just sign. I don't have much time; there's a lot to handle at my company."

"I have no money, nothing. I can't afford Pan Juan medical bills, and I can't clean up the mess of the Chloe Group. But Brown, are you asking me to hand everything over just like that?"

"I'll take full responsibility for Chloe Juan's medical expenses. You can stay if you want," Brown said, his back still turned, but his voice clear.

"Brown, I don't quite understand. You could just give me a sum of money, as if I'm selling..."

"Not possible, Charlotte Scott. Listen carefully. Agree and sign, or disagree and leave."

Hearing his words, Charlotte Scott bit her lip, turned to look at the open door, and began to walk slowly towards it, step by step.
