At a commercial building bidding event.
Brendan Carter sat in his seat, his gaze deep and focused on the front, seemingly lost in thought. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed his strongest competitor, Eric Hudson, giving him a knowing look and a challenging grin.
Unfazed, Brendan calmly wrote a series of numbers on a card and handed it to his assistant beside him. This bidding followed an all-or-nothing approach, with the highest bid securing the contract.
Five minutes later.
"Congratulations to Mr. Carter for winning with a bid of 20.1 million, while Mr. Hudson unfortunately missed the opportunity by a mere hundred thousand." The host announced the final result.
"This is impossible!" Eric stood up and shouted angrily.
Brendan looked at Eric with indifference, then his gaze seemed to unintentionally sweep over Eric's female assistant, Lynn Spencer, who was standing beside him. She was also staring back at him with innocent, bright eyes.
He let out a cold laugh, stood up with the help of his cane, nodded politely to those around him, and then walked gracefully towards the exit. Everyone couldn't help but admire his commanding presence. And he was undoubtedly the most striking man despite his limp.
Brendan got into the back seat of his Mercedes, and his assistant hurriedly joined him, exclaiming excitedly, "Mr. Carter, we really won by a narrow margin!"
"Someone told me Eric's base price." Brendan replied softly.
He gazed out the window, and recalled that the half-hour before the bidding began, he had entered the elevator, and just as the doors were about to close, a girl rushed in, accidentally bumping into him in her haste. Brendan recognized the girl as Eric's personal assistant, whom he had met at an auction half a month ago.
The girl helped him pick up his cane and apologized profusely. When Brendan regained his grip on the cane, he felt a slip of paper in his hand.
The paper had only one number, 2000.
This bidding was of great significance for him, and Eric was his most formidable opponent. Brendan had been pondering what base price Eric might offer. When he saw the note, he suspected it might be a trap. But seeing Eric's provocative smile, he had a gut instinct that led him to take a gamble.
"I think she'll come looking for me soon." Brendan said with a sly smile.
Winning the bid today was undoubtedly a cause for celebration for him.
Brendan's prediction was correct. A week later, the female assistant showed up at his company, and he instructed the receptionist to let her in.
"Hello, my name is Lynn."
The girl sitting across from him beamed with a sunny smile, her eyes clear as if not being stained by the world. Brendan handed over a check he had prepared in advance. "Thank you. I believe in returning favors. I'll meet any reasonable amount."
Lynn didn't even glance at the check and shook her head. "I don't need money."
This surprised Brendan. He scrutinized Lynn and asked in confusion, "If it's not for money, why would you betray your boss?"
"For you!" Lynn replied bluntly.
With that, Brendan's expression changed entirely. It was the first time he had encountered a girl with such audacity. He kept a stern face. "That's not a very funny joke."
Lynn remained unfazed by the awkward silence. "I have great respect for you, Mr. Carter." She paused and continued, "I've already resigned from Mr. Hudson's company. Do you need any staff here? Someone with a knack for being cute, perhaps?"
Brendan was momentarily stunned. She truly was a rare character. He then replied calmly, "I don't think anyone would dare hire someone who has betrayed their boss."
"But you just said you repay kindness!" Lynn raised her voice slightly but maintained her smile. "I'm hardworking and can do any job!"
Brendan rubbed his forehead in frustration. Yes, he couldn't go back on his word. This girl was indeed persistent. After much thought, he couldn't think of any vacant positions in the company. Finally, he had a sudden idea. "Then you can be the receptionist at the entrance."
This way, he fulfilled her request, did his duty, and wouldn't have to worry about her posing a threat to the company.
"No problem!" Lynn agreed happily without hesitation.
