Elaine is a seventeen year old dark haired high schooler who is a quiet twelve grader. She has no competition in school except for the bully from Jane, the school's beau, leader of the cheer leading squad, not minding the fact that Elaine is a good basketball player. A new student joined them in their last year. He's handsome, tall and dark haired. Elaine likes him and luckily she has been assigned as his school guide. But Jane likes him too and wants Elaine to stay away from him. It's no problem as Elaine likes her privacy. But the frequent calls from Jonas, his taking her to school and dropping her off at home makes him irresistible. Elaine is not ready for the publicity a handsome popular boyfriend will bring and she cannot afford distraction in this stage of school. Her parents have seen Jonas and like him, but her favourite teacher wants her to stay away. Will Elaine run to the library or garden as always? Will she be telling Jonas she likes him and give a shot at high school romance?
I hated school. I hated that I was picked on. Yeah, a twelve grader who had no friends and spent all her lunch time in the library and also very good at basketball.
But it was not my fault that all they thought about was parties, boys, girls and not about college, I mean this was a very crucial stage of our lives.
I went down, got my usual lunch of coleslaw; yeah, I don't eat the cafeteria food. Kissed mom good bye and got into the car with dad, yeah I still ride with my father.
"Honey, you have got this. Now go in and show them who's the boss." Dad said smiling. He did that everyday and I was grateful for it. But it had stopped working.
"Good bye daddy" yes, he was my daddy.
"Hey, Elaine how was your weekend" my seatmate Elsa greeted me at the hall way. She always joked that we could have been friends, but we knew it wouldn't happen. She was a low-key extrovert. Not that I don't like the social space, but it is so long and unnecessary. I would rather talk about a game, or books. Yes, I'm a freak.
"It was fine, I recently read a book by an African writer and..."
"O my God, did you see Jane's post, where you on her live? She asked.
"No, what happened".
"A lot of things. She finally shared the pictures from her vacation and..." yes I zoned. How could she not still get me.
"Let's have this conversation later, bye" and she turned to have a conversation with another person. Yeah an extrovert.
I needed to make a stop at coach Sam's office and I couldn't believe who was in. The most beautiful boy on planet earth. Like how did he have wavy hair and what was the colour of his eyes. He looked at me and I began to regret my choice of clothing. I was on a black pants and blue shirt, my go to sandles and lip gloss. His jacket could probably buy my entire outfit.
"Elaine, how are you. Good morning. We have a new addition to the boys team. This is Jonas. Jonas this is the Elaine. She's a fine player, the best on the team actually.
"Nice to meet you Elaine" and his voice were like the musical instruments in unison. I couldn't say anything. I just had to nod.
"Now, I couldn't trust anyone with him so if you could look through his schedule and help him settle down " I nodded again.
"I hope you are fine, Elaine " yes I know I was acting weird.
"I'm fine" o no, I sounded crooked.
" Well, good bye, and Jonas, be a good boy"
Jonas was standing with me already and I heard him murmur.
"Good bye, Mr Sam"
"Could I see" I was sounding nervous and I didn't even trust my hand to not shake while I tried to take the schedule.
"Here you go, I think I have language class now" well I had language class now
"Let's see, french, well I'm having Spanish now. Anyways, I could point you to the class and for your other classes..."
"Can I get your number? So I csn call you after the class and you could show me the other, if you don't mind " . Did this hunk just ask for my number. Of course it was a yes.
"Okay, your phone, please " I punched in and waved him good by. Oh, I haven't shown him his locker space. Anyways, I think we would have plenty of time for that.
Spanish class was fast, I mean the time ran quickly and I was happy for that. I mean I wouldn't pass staring at Jonas face. I heard my phone ring.
"Elaine, I think I have lost my way." No hi, well we would deal with that later.
"Where are you" I finally located him and it turned out we had biology class and maths class before lunchtime.
"We would have to look for a seat for you"
"Can't I sit with you"and I felt butterflies.
" I have a seatmate and besides the teachers have to know you."
"I think we have most classes together though. Not really, besides why are you taking biology .You are an art student"
" I enjoy the classes, and you surely know the part I enjoy " he said with a wink and I laughed out loud. No freaking way.
"We would walk around and eat during lunchtime so you could find your way around."
"No worries, looking forward to it though " and I felt butterflies again.
"You guys don't have new students every time " he asked.
"I don't know, I really am the wrong person to ask"
"Why?,you are the library girl " that really hurts.
"Yeah, you could say that". We got to class and I was grateful for the distraction.
And everybody's eyes were on us. Not us really, on Jonas.
"Elaine, you are late, and who's this"
"Sorry ma'am, this is Jonas and he's a new student"
"So you were a tour guide, welcome Jonas, guess we would have to look for a seat for you, oh, there's one at the back. Now what would we be talking on today."
Miss Sabrina continued with the class and I couldn't help but notice that Jane and her crew had their gaze on him. Seems we wouldn't be leaving for lunchtime immediately.
Miss Sabrina had left the class and Jane had circled him.
"Hey handsome"
"Yo, what's up man. Welcome to Brentwood high." The crew seemed invested in him.
"You could join us for lunch you know" Jane offered.
"Yeah, let's fill you in on the wonders of Brentwood high" the Grinch Bricker was offering
"Well, Elaine and I have made plans" they all laughed
"You mean Elaine. Dude, you would be going to the library"
"And I don't mind. Later man." He said to them and walked to me.
