"Journalism never can be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault." Grunswald, Henry Anatole
The newsroom of "The Sentinel" pulsed with an electric intensity, the symphony of controlled chaos produced by the clatter of keyboards and the murmur of impassioned debates. Aisha Rodriguez went over the documents set on her desk, her eyes fixed because of concentration. Her pulse quickened with every damning finding she came across.
source. Bribery is it. Squindle. The lines, which portrayed the rich and strong of the city in a dismal light, jumped off the page Rich developer Victor Greystone ruled from city hall to the most dangerous areas of New York City. He was key in the dispute. Aisha dedicated herself to expose all the truths after finding a buried treasure.
Her dream was broken by the buzzing sound on her phone. From Leo, her source, it came an SMS: We are meeting tonight. Eleven00 p.m. The lane of the old theatre.
Aisha turned to check the time. She had few hours to get ready. She drew deeply, gathered her notes, and gently packed them into her bag. Her anticipation for that moment had at last come.
As she was ready to depart, Marcus Bennett, the aspiring editor-in-chief of "The Sentinel," blocked her path. His dominating presence was hard to overlook when he wore one of his well fitted suits.
Marcus responded, "Rodriguez," in a voice that suggested both curiosity and concern. "What's got you in so great hurry?"
Aisha remarked, "I've got a lead, Marcus," trying to keep her tone light. "Something important."
Marcus gazed up. "Mind to share?"
" Not right now. I have to start with some confirmations.
He nodded after only looking at her momentarily. "Ok. Just use prudence. You know the risks this city could provide.
Aisha said, "Always," with a determined gaze, then she slid past him and out into the crowded streets.
The dull light from a flickering streetlamp cast an eerie shadow hue over the road behind the antique theatre. Aisha stepped closer, her heart thumping in her chest, camera ready. She observed Leo going back and forth uneasily.
She said, "Leo," then came out from the shadows.
He jumped and his eyes became terrified. Aisha, you terrified the crap out of me!
"I'm sorry," she said, glancing around. "Did you bring what I ordered?"
Leo nodded and handed over a flash disc to her. Everything on this website is there. emails, bank records, and a few lectures' audio recordings. This is larger than I could have imagined.
Aisha's hold on the flash disc became increasingly strained. Leo, great work. Maybe this is the break we so much need.
He answered, Just be cautious. Greystone wears eyes. Should he uncover-"
"It's true," she said cutting in. "I will be cautious."
Leo nodded and disappeared into the night, leaving Aisha alone to think. She turned to go after firmly putting the flash drive into her pocket, a sound stopping her in her tracks. Footsteps, close and approaching.
Her pulse pounding, she pushed herself against the wall. Footfall became louder until a guy emerged from the darkness. Malik Thomas. His sharp eyes locked with hers, a mixture of shock and contempt burning over them.
"What are you doing here??" With hissing, Aisha said.
Malik lashing back with a low, desperate voice said, "I could ask you the same thing." "Aisha, you're in over your head."
Her rage mounting, she wrinkled at him. " I had this under control until you showed up."
Malik said, "Sure you did." She fired back. "Until you didn't."
Before she could respond, another stranger walked into the alley. Victor Greystone. His chilly, analytical eye looked around him, a terrible smile on his lips.
Greystone responded, "Well, well," his voice tinged with bitterness. "What exactly we have here? Two selfless interfering reporters without restraint."
Aisha's breath froze in her throat as she understood the seriousness of the matter. Trapped between Greystone and Malik and without escape, her mind started to run with possibilities for a plan.
Malik said, "Stay behind me," then positioned himself in front of her defensively.
Greystone grinned more and the cold metal glowed in the dusk as he fired a handgun. He screamed, "Any last words?" the rifle pointed straight at them.
Ideas flew through Aisha's thoughts and she felt her heart hammer in her chest. She had to act fast. Her eyes strayed to Malik, whose jaw tightened. This was not at all done.
And they had just started quite recently.
Aisha Rodriguez stood in the dark alley, her pulse thumping with the knowledge this was a major issue was. Her long black hair framed her deep brown eyes, which mirrored a combination of panic and defiance. She could sense the vitality Malik brought from his tall, strong body as he stood next to. His chiselled features shone in the faint light, his blue eyes keen and targeted like a predator on Greystone.
Greystone responded, "Well, well," his voice tinged with bitterness. "What exactly we have here? Two selfless interfering reporters without restraint."
Aisha's breath stopped in her throat as she realised how terrible things were.
This was hardly over
Malik low-key growled at her, "Don't do anything stupid."
In Aisha's eyes, frustration and resentment erupted. "I kept this under control until you arrived."
Malik shot back with disgust in his voice, "Sure you did." "Until you hadn't."
Greystone fired the gun, reverberating throughout the alley before she could respond. "This is enough small conversation. It's time to decide who should be leaving here.
Thoughts spun in Aisha's head. They had to leave fast, she knew. Her eyes met Malik's and they silently understood one other. Should they be living, they had to work together.
Malik let go of the weapon and suddenly launched himself at Greystone. The weapon dropped with a clatter, and Aisha kicked it out; her adrenaline was running as she sank into the fight. Greystone responded with surprising force, but Malik's relentless physical strength and resolve would soon prevail.
Aisha's breath came in short, gasps as she watched the struggle. Malik battled Greystone, his biceps rippling beneath his shirt as he moved with grace and accuracy. She could not ignore the risk, however, or the sheer, magnetic intensity radiating from him.
Greystone released himself and tried last-ditch to drive Malik off. He turned to run, but Aisha arrived quicker than him. She swung a close-by metal pipe with enormous power and struck Greystone in the leg. His suffering was a roar, he faltered and fell.
With grateful eyes, Malik went to hold Greystone and murmured, "nice swing."
Aisha's pulse surged as she looked down at their defeated opponent; the flash drive in her pocket acted as a constant reminder of the dangers involved. She went on, her voice a bit shaky. We have to leave this place.
Malik nodded with a seriousness that suggested "We have to get this story out before Greystone's goons arrive seeking for us."
Greystone's hands were fast bound and he was left in the alley while they returned to Malik's car. There was a real conflict between them, an irrepressible need seething under the surface of professional rivalry.
As they drove throughout the city, Aisha felt as if she was under continual observation-the neon lights reflected vivid colours on the car windows. Every shadow that passed looked to be harbouring a threat, and everyone might be a rival.
Malik said, "We're not safe yet," breaking the calm. "Greystone won't fall without a fight."
Aisha nodded and peered around the streets for any sign of approaching danger. "Yes, I am conscious. The evidence, nevertheless, is here. We are able to beat him.
Malik looked sidelong at her, his facial expression unknown. "Are you not only doing this for the story?"
Aisha caught his gaze; heart racing. Not number. I'm doing this because justice drives me. For everyone he has harmed."
Malik nodded, his face flashing with respect. "then let's ensure we get it right."
They arrived on the outskirts of the city to a small, unassuming structure. Malik showed her a hidden office loaded with computers and documentation once she was inside. "We shall work from here going forward," he said. It is secure. For the moment.
Thoughts flying through her brain, Aisha turned around. "We have to verify the material, go over the flash drive, and ready the narrative."
Malik nodded and fixedly stared at her. "We'll do this together."
As they started working, their conflict was almost tangible. Every movement of their hands and every glance they shared seemed to ignite. Despite the noise and risk, Aisha struggled to ignore her developing sentiments of love for Malik.
Not an option, however, were distractions. Not at the moment. Their lives revolved around the tasks they had to do.
As they worked through the data, a huge crash interrupted the silence. Guns drawn, masked assailants poured in as the door blew open.
Aisha's heart sprang into her throat as she realised they were not alone.
"Get down!" Malik shouted and pulled her behind a desk as bullets flew through the air.
The battle was just getting underway.
